Amble 70 miles down the coastal highway from Charleston to Savannah or wend your way down the Intracoastal Waterway. Along the way you will find yourself in dreamy Beaufort.
Everyone on Main Street knows each other.
With 500 years of
colorful history, Beaufort is the consummate small lowcountry city. Her
history goes back to the Spanish arriving in Port Royal Sound in 1562.
The National Register of Historic Places thinks enough of Beaufort to
have placed 90 of her beautiful buildings in their registry. Beaufort
is the nearest city to the colonial Plantations in the beautifully
preserved Ace Basin.
Spreading out from
this gem are 60 small sea islands, some of which are Lady’s,
Coosaw, Cat, Fripp, St. Helena, Dataw, Hunting, Spring, and near Hilton
Head, Daufuskie. You will find gated resort communities with world
class golf courses. The Spanish moss, live oaks, ante bellum
residences, and upscale planned communities all lure the retirees and
relocating families to this special part of the Carolina lowcountry
coast.
